Bjorn was a young teen when he and his father took part in an expedition to find Vinland. While there, the warriors took part in one of the Opening/Closing rituals vs. a group of skraelings *indians*. Being too young to take part, Bjorn was the sentry, which saved his life when the ritual went against the vikings. Being caught in the mystical backlash left him effectively immortal and unable to sire children. He’s never been decapitated or completely immolated, so just how immortal he actually is is open to debate.

For the next 600 years, Bjorn wandered the width and breadth of the Americas, occasionally selling his sword in conflicts, but always with an eye out for “det Store Rituaet” *the Great Rituals* that his father had told him were his duty when he reached manhood. He has taken part in more than one of these.

Originally boisterous and outgoing, the years have taught Bjorn the value of discretion and introspection. No longer the rough-and-tumble brawler he started his adult-life as, he now uses any method necessary to achieve his goals.

Knowledge has been the cornerstone of Bjorn’s life since the Roanoke Colony first settled the Virginia Colony. Another attempt at the Great Ritual gone horribly wrong for a group of Europeans, Bjorn had been acting as a local scout for the English until the time of the ritual. His lover, Wenefrid Powell, was among the European ritualists lost. For many years, Bjorn blamed himself for her death. If only he’d KNOWN more, he could have done something to change events. This drive for knowledge is what leads him to read compulsively.

Once every twenty-seven years, Bjorn travels back to L’anse aux Meadows to honor his father and kinsmen. The last time he visited, a small band of cultists in Indian ritual garb attacked him at the site of the Great Ritual. Their bodies were never found, and no report of missing persons matching their descriptions ever surfaced. Their identities and motives are a mystery he is still trying to solve, but with little success so far.

I’m going to need help linking mechanics and fluff as far as skills go. Logically, a man with almost a thousand years of experiential knowledge and no learning-disability/memory leak is going to know a LOT of stuff.
